Here we see a wonderful specimen of beautifully crystallized Strontianite from Oberdorf an der Laming, Austria. These are now famous classics, as perfectly developed hexagonal crystals of this species are extremely rare. Strontianite is named after the Scottish west coast village of Strontian, where this species was first found and for which the element strontium is also named. Translucent, colorless, sometimes pale milky to yolk-yellow colored hexagonal prisms up to 1.3 cm size are richly perched throughout a vuggy matrix of thin, intergrown Dolomite plates. The Strontianite prisms are, where possible, double-terminated, which is the case with several crystals.
