Description

This is a very attractive specimen of the EXTREMELY RARE silicate McGovernite from the Sterling Hill Mine, the TYPE LOCALITY in the Franklin Mining District. According to Mindat, McGovernite occurs only at this single location worldwide. The species was named after the famous Franklin mineral collector, J.J. McGovern. This McGovernite specimen is unusual because most of the material was in the form of thin sheets, while these radiant crystal sprays are the most desirable, especially because they contrast prominently with a white Calcite matrix. It is indeed an attractive specimen, and for the species, consisting of massive fluorescent Calcite and sprinkled with Willemite and Franklinite.
