Description

In principle, the same disclaimer applies to good Fluorites specimens from the deposits near the village of Zobes east of the city of Plauen as to those from the Dörfel Quarry about 55 kilometers to the northeast. However, I consider good Zobes specimens to be somewhat more rare. The display side of this specimen is densely covered with grayish-green translucent and sharp cubes up to 2.1 cm on edge. The back, on the other side, is not only less densely covered, but some of the crystals also have crystallized in more cuboid forms. The crystal faces have a matt luster, possibly by natural processes, not unusual for a Uranium deposit. The matrix is sparkling microcrystalline Quartz. Small, sharp Chalcopyrite crystals and crystal clusters with a golden color and a metallic luster occupy spaces between the Fluorite crystals but also are inclusions. SDAG Wismut operated the Zobes Uranium mines, which turned out to be the second largest Uranium deposit in Saxony, between 1947 and 1963. The mine and the property have been properly reclaimed in the late 1990 and early 2000s, and as a result, new finds are out of the question.
