Description

The Brownley Hill Mine near Nenthead in Cumbria was mined for zinc ore from 1914 until 1936 and produced a considerable number of good ore specimens, both during its operating period and through the work of collectors, particularly after World War II. Here we see wonderful modified cubes with distinctly beveled corners and slight but visible parquetted surfaces. The sharp-edged, lead-gray crystals reach up to 1.6 cm in size, have a wonderfully fresh metallic sheen, and are associated with smaller, black-brown, also highly lustrous Sphalerite crystals. This highly aesthetic and high-contrast material comes from older finds from the 1980s. Ex. Dr. Manfred Schönfelder collection
