Description

This is an incredibly rich and equally aesthetic piece of a Kola classic, namely Kovdorskite, from the world-famous Kovdor-Zheleznyi mine. Kovdorskite is a VERY RARE hydrated magnesium phosphate found in only two localities in the world. This piece comes from the TYPE LOCALITY on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. This rich piece is characterized by intergrown, glassy, gem-like, colorless crystals that protrude densely from a matrix. The largest crystal reaches a length of 2.4 cm. This is probably one of the finest recovered from excavations by the Fersman Museum in Moscow in the mid-1990s. Most, but not all, of the crystals are intact. Over the years, I have had several pieces of this species pass through my hands, but this piece is undoubtedly among the finest.
