Description

Up until the end of the 19th century, the Bournonite specimens from the venerable Herodsfoot Mine, approximately 5 km southwest of Liskeard, has set the international standard for the species. Since the last operating period between 1845 and 1884 and the associated closure of the mine, good Bournonite has become increasingly rare and are now only offered sporadically and then at astronomical prices. This specimen, in my opinion offered at a very reasonable price compared to similar pieces on the Internet, has the typical cog wheel-shaped crystals about one centimeter tall. These have a steel gray color with the best metallic luster imaginable. While the specimen isn´t completely perfect, which isn´t surprising given the low Mohs hardness of 2½ - 3 of Bournonite, it does have an almost perfect display side, while the imperfections are only on the back and near the base of the piece. A beautiful miniature specimen with excellent aesthetics.
