Description

Good Thomsenolite pieces with isolated crystals as we see here, are relatively rare, and this is an excellent, all around crystallized specimen. This wonderful item is loaded with sharply formed crystals up to 3 mm, nicely lining several vugs on a micro-crystalline Thomsenolite and Cryolite matrix. For the past century and a half, Thomsenolite specimens from Greenland have been the standard for this species. Thomsenolite is a rare hydrated sodium-calcium-aluminum fluoride and Ivigtut is the TYPE-LOCALITY. The locality is long-time abandoned and meanwhile underwater. They mined the deposit at Ivigtut below sea level to extract the aluminum ore. This is a very striking and excellent piece! The piece dates from the deposit´s heyday in the early 1900s and was then part of the Bernhard Dünkel collection.
