Description

The mines around the town of Schlema (now Bad Schlema) are best known for their magnificent Silver minerals and not do much for good Cuprite specimens. However, this piece is a rare and very outstanding example for this historic deposit where Iron, Copper and Silver mining dates back to the 14th century. The specimen is covered with numerous, approximately 3 mm tall, tightly intergrown cuboctahedral Cuprite crystals on typical matrix. The color of the sharp crystals is a distinctly reddish black-gray with a nice adamantine luster. A must-have specimen from a mining region that in the late 1950s turned out to host the biggest Uranium deposit in Europe.
