Description

Light blue Afghanite crystals are well crystallized and show their trigonal, short prismatic habit. They are perched on light beige Calcite (marble) matrix which is typical for the locality. The crystals are sharp with a vitreous luster and are translucent. Afghanite was named for, well, the country it was found and described, more precisely, the type locality Ladjuar Medam ("Blue Mine") a large Lapis-lazuli-bearing skarn zone within the Lapis-lazuli deposit Sar-e-Sang in the Kuran wa Munjan District, Badakhshan, Afghanistan.
