Description

Gratonite is a VERY RARE lead-arsenic sulfosalt, and good specimens like this one most likely date back to the 1930s. Most of the few truly good pieces were recovered during this time—and this specimen is richly coated with well-formed crystals, each half a centimeter in size. It comes from the TYPE LOCALITY, the Excelsior mine on Cerro Pasco in the Peruvian Andes. These extremely sharp Gratonite crystals, with fine metallic luster, cover the entire specimen. Although not all of them are perfect, this is a very rich specimen, and one of which are rarely offered at reasonable prices these days. The crystals are mostly excellently terminated and sharp-edged. A thoroughly awesome piece.
