Description

This is a stunning, nicely twinned white cluster of Whewellite crystals from the famous shaft 371 in the Schlema-Hartenstein area in Saxony. In this case, we have an even more precise locality description, namely the 1575-meter level. The cluster measures 3.9 cm in length and is a classic, textbook twin for this species. The color is a soft, silky white and simply beautiful, and the intergrowth is very aesthetic. They are twinned and look a bit like Moroccan cerussite twins, in ghostly white. Good Whewellite crystals were very rare and highly desired by the miners. Unfortunately there were no larger pockets, and thus, the finds were largely limited to individual pieces and mini-pockets, which were found sporadically here and there in the 1960s and 1970s. They are almost impossible to find on the market nowadays. The textbook crystal shape, the almost translucent texture and the beautiful way it is displayed on the base make it a very aesthetic and desirable specimen of this RARE calcium oxalate.
